Castellón de la Plana is the capital of the Castellon province of the Valencia region in Spain. The whole Castellon province is one of the most mountainous terrains of Spain. Castellón de la Plana is located between the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. The city with the modern population of 178,000 people was founded by the moors as a stronghold, but after the conquering by James I it moved from the Desert Mountains peak to the plain and became a village in the mid-13th century. After the series of wars in the mid-19th century Castellón de la Plana began to expand and became the capital of the new province. The development of railway and port made the city financially successful. Now the economy of Castellón de la Plana is based on industry and craftwork. Even today Castellón de la Plana is still developing and has a good educational background of the Jaume I University.

From the tourist point of view Castellón de la Plana is also a very attractive destination. The city with the long history is rich historical monuments of the different cultures such as Moorish, Valencian and others. Practically all the major sights of Castellón de la Plana are located on the Plaza Mayor in the Old Town. The main of them are The Gothic Concatedral de Santa Maria of the 13th century, The Ayuntamiento or the City Hall, The Llotja del Cànem – the local exchange market, and the Basilica of Santa María del Lledó built in the 13th century.
